Epístola de Bahá'u'lláh para Georg David Hardegg

Georg David Hardegg (1812-1879) foi co-fundador da Sociedade Alemã de Templários. Em 1868, este grupo religioso estabeleceu-se em Haifa, na Palestina otomana. Hardegg sobe que alguns Bahá’ís estavam presos em Akká (do outro lado da baía) e entrou em contacto com outros Bahá’ís que se tinham estabelecido em Haifa. Harder tentou perceber o que eram os princípios e ensinamentos Bahá’ís; pediu um encontro com Bahá’u’lláh, mas esse encontro nunca aconteceu. No entanto, teve a oportunidade de se encontrar com ‘Abdu’l-Bahá.

O texto que se segue é uma tradução provisória de uma Epístola de Bahá’u’lláh dirigida a Georg David Hardegg. A tradução oficial em inglês desta Epístola foi publicada ontem na Bahá’í Reference Library.

 

In the name of God, the Most Holy!	Em nome de Deus, o Santíssimo!
Thy sealed letter hath reached the presence of this Wronged One, and from it We have inhaled the sweet savour of thy devotion to God, the Omnipotent Protector, the Self-Subsistent. We beseech Him to make known unto thee that which is concealed within the Written Tablet, and to grant that thou mayest catch the accents of the Mystic Dove that singeth upon the celestial bough, and hear the soft murmur of the water that is life indeed as it floweth in a stream of utterance and wisdom from the fountainhead of the Will of Him Who is the Lord of all mankind.	A tua carta selada chegou à presença deste Injuriado, e dela inalámos o doce aroma da tua devoção a Deus, o Protector Omnipotente, o Que Subsiste por Si Próprio. Suplicamos-Lhe que te dê a conhecer o que está oculto na Epístola Escrita, e que permita que recebas os tons da Pomba Mística que canta no ramo celestial, e ouças o suave murmúrio da água que é realmente vida tal como ela flui numa corrente de expressão e sabedoria da fonte da Vontade d’Aquele Que é o Senhor de toda a humanidade.
O friend! It behoveth thee to reflect upon the Word of God, to ponder its greatness, and to meditate upon its sweetness. This Word, verily, is sufficient unto the peoples of the earth. The first one to believe in Him Who was the Spirit1 was so enraptured by the Word of God that, in his eagerness to embrace its truth, he detached himself from everything that men possess. Such is the condition of all who would be leviathans in the Most Mighty Ocean.	Ó amigo! Incumbe-te refletir sobre a Palavra de Deus, ponderar sobre a sua grandeza e meditar sobre a sua doçura. Esta Palavra, em verdade, é suficiente para os povos da terra. O primeiro a acreditar n’Aquele que era o Espírito [1] ficou tão extasiado pela Palavra de Deus que, na ânsia de abraçar a sua verdade, desligou-se de tudo o que os homens possuem. Essa é a condição de todos os que pretendem ser leviatãs no Mais Poderoso Oceano.
O thou learned doctor and percipient divine! Know that the people have, for the most part, been hindered by their passions from turning themselves to God, the Lord of all names. Whoso looketh with his inner eye, however, shall be granted vision, and shall testify to what he witnesseth, exclaiming: “All praise be unto my Lord, the Most Exalted!” The tidings of God’s loving-kindness have been announced to land and sea, and unto the nations hath been given the promise of the advent of Him Who shall heal their sicknesses, even Him Who shall build up the Temple of the Lord.2 Well is it with them who understand!	Ó tu, doutor erudito e sacerdote conhecedor! Sabe que as pessoas, na sua maioria, foram impedidas pelas suas paixões de se voltarem para Deus, o Senhor de todos os nomes. Quem observar com a sua visão interior, porém, receberá a visão e comprovará o que testemunha, exclamando: “Todos os louvores ao meu Senhor, o Exaltado!” As boas-novas da misericórdia de Deus foram anunciadas à terra e ao mar, e às nações foi dada a promessa do advento d’Aquele que curará as suas doenças, e mesmo Aquele que edificará o Templo do Senhor. [2] Felizes aqueles que entendem!
Lo, the appointed time is now arrived, and Carmel crieth out as if moved to ecstasy by the soul-stirring breezes of her Lord. Happy are those who hear her cry! Whoso hearkeneth with his inner ear shall hear the voice of the Rock3 as he beareth witness, with a mighty voice, to the Everlasting God. Blessed are they who perceive the savour of Divine utterance and, severing themselves from the world of being, advance towards the Kingdom. Behold! The things that had been mentioned in the Books of old have now appeared, and yet the people, though they look upon them, comprehend them not!	Eis que chegou a hora marcada, e o Carmelo brada como que levado ao êxtase pelas brisas comoventes do seu Senhor. Felizes aqueles que o ouvem clamar! Quem escuta com os ouvidos interiores ouvirá a voz da Rocha [3] ao dar testemunho, com uma voz poderosa, do Deus Eterno. Bem-aventurados aqueles que se apercebem do sabor da expressão Divina e, separando-se do mundo do ser, avançam para o Reino. Vede! As coisas que foram mencionadas nos Livros antigos apareceram agora, e, no entanto, as pessoas, embora as vejam, não as compreendem!
Regard thou, O friend, the mystery of the Great Reversal in the Sign of the Sovereign. Through this reversal He hath caused the exalted to be abased and the abased to be exalted. Call thou to mind how, in the days of Jesus, it was those who were distinguished for their learning, the men of letters and religion, who denied Him, whilst humble fishermen made haste to gain admittance into the Kingdom—this is the meaning of that which hath been expressed by symbol and allusion in the obscurities of words.	Considera, ó amigo, o mistério da Grande Reversão no Sinal do Soberano. Através desta reversão Ele fez com que os exaltados fossem humilhados e os humilhados fossem exaltados. Recorda-te de como, nos dias de Jesus, foram aqueles que se distinguiam pelo seu conhecimento, os homens de letras e de religião, que O negaram, enquanto humildes pescadores se precipitaram a conseguir ser admitidos no Reino - este é o significado daquilo que foi transmitido por símbolos e alusões na obscuridade das palavras.
Great, immeasurably great is the Cause! Peter, the Apostle, despite the pre-eminence of his rank and the loftiness of his station, when questioned held back from speaking. Wert thou, with thy thoughts centred wholly on God, to reflect upon the happenings of former times, thou wouldst see the light shining refulgently before thy face, and wouldst keep it constantly before thy gaze. The truth is, of a certainty, too evident to be enshrouded in a veil, the way too clear to be obscured by darkness, and certitude too manifest to be eclipsed by any fleeting whim. Those who have been debarred therefrom are the followers of their corrupt desires. Today they are reposing on their bed of slumber; erelong they shall awake and rush, without avail, to find the things that have escaped them. Well is it with them who have inhaled the Divine fragrance at the time when it was shed abroad: These, verily, have attained unto that which is the portion of the sincere among God’s servants.	Grande, imensamente grande é a Causa! Pedro, o Apóstolo, apesar da preeminência da sua posição e da sublimidade da sua condição, quando questionado, absteve-se de falar. Se tu, com os teus pensamentos totalmente centrados em Deus, reflectisses sobre os acontecimentos dos tempos passados, verias a luz a brilhar resplandecentemente perante o teu rosto e mantê-la-ias constantemente diante dos teus olhos. A verdade é, certamente, demasiado evidente para ser envolta num véu, o caminho demasiado claro para ser obscurecido pelas trevas, e a certeza demasiado manifesta para ser eclipsada por qualquer capricho efémero. Aqueles que foram excluídos disto são seguidores dos seus desejos corruptos. Hoje estão a repousar no seu leito de torpor; em breve acordarão e correrão, sem sucesso, para encontrar as coisas que lhes escaparam. Bem-aventurados aqueles que inalaram a fragrância Divina no momento em que ela foi espalhada: Estes, em verdade, alcançaram aquilo que é a parte dos sinceros entre os servos de Deus.
Know thou that We have seen the letter “Ṣád”, which appeareth in the word “ṣulḥ”,4 become embellished by the ornament of the upright Alif. This, verily, is that which hath been recorded in an outspread Tablet. No sooner were the splendours of that Divine Word revealed than the portals of heaven were unlocked, the Kingdom of Names made manifest, and all was brought to consummation by the appearance of the letter “Há”, which had been connected to the recumbent Alif, itself embellished by the Point from which had sprung the Treasured Name, the Hidden Secret, and the Guarded Symbol—that same Point from which all things have appeared and unto which they have all returned. Thereupon We saw the Word give utterance to a Word which was received by every people in accordance with its own particular tongue and language. As it spoke forth, there rose above the horizon of its utterance a Sun of such effulgent splendour that, overshadowed by its radiance, the celestial sun grew dark; then it cried out: “The brow of seventy hath been adorned with the diadem of forty and united with the seven before ten”; at this it sighed, and moaned aloud: “Alas, I see the house oblivious of its Master, the son unmindful of his Father, the seeker heedless of the sanctuary and refuge for which he yearneth.”	Sabe que vimos a letra “Ṣád”, que aparece na palavra “sulh”, [4] ser embelezada pelo ornamento do Alif íntegro. Isto, em boa verdade, é o que foi registado numa Epístola aberta. Assim que os esplendores dessa Palavra Divina foram revelados, os portais do céu foram abertos, o Reino dos Nomes manifestou-se, e tudo foi levado à consumação pelo aparecimento da letra “Há”, que tinha sido ligada ao Alif inclinado, ele próprio embelezado pelo Ponto de onde surgiu o Nome Estimado, o Segredo Oculto e o Símbolo Guardado - esse mesmo Ponto de onde todas as coisas apareceram e para o qual todas regressaram. Seguidamente, vimos o Verbo expressar uma Palavra que foi recebida por cada povo de acordo com a sua língua e dialecto próprio. Enquanto falava, ergueu-se no horizonte da sua expressão um Sol com esplendor tão radiante que, ofuscado pelo seu brilho, o sol celeste escureceu; depois bradou: “A fronte dos setenta foi adornada com o diadema dos quarenta e unida aos sete antes dos dez”; com isto, suspirou e gemeu alto: “Ah, vejo a casa esquecida do seu Mestre, o filho esquecido do seu Pai, o buscador inconsciente do santuário e refúgio pelo qual anseia”.
O thou who soarest in the atmosphere of understanding! Whoso perceiveth that which though solid, floweth; which though static, flieth; which is both manifest and hidden, both resplendent and obscure will be so enraptured by the effulgence of heavenly illumination that he will rise up on the wings of ardent longing into the empyrean of nearness, holiness, and heavenly reunion.	Ó tu que voas na atmosfera da compreensão! Quem percebe aquilo que, embora sólido, flui, que embora estático, voa, que está simultaneamente manifesto e oculto, simultaneamente resplandecente e obscuro, ficará tão extasiado com brilho da iluminação celestial que se elevará nas asas do desejo ardente para o empíreo da proximidade, da santidade e da reunião celestial.
Respecting thy comments on the question of “darkness”, We testify that it hath encompassed all mankind. Happy the man who hath been illumined by the light of Him Who hath shone forth resplendent from the horizon of the mercy of His Lord, the Most Holy. This darkness is naught but the idle imaginings of men, by which they have been prevented from directing themselves towards the Kingdom when, by the bidding of God, the Lord of the realm on high, it was made manifest.	Relativamente aos teus comentários sobre a questão das “trevas”, testemunhamos que elas envolveram toda a humanidade. Feliz o homem que foi iluminado pela luz d’Aquele que brilhou resplandecente no horizonte da misericórdia do Seu Senhor, o Santíssimo. Estas trevas não são mais do que as imaginações fúteis dos homens, com as quais foram impedidos de se dirigirem para o Reino quando, por ordem de Deus, o Senhor do reino no alto, se tornou manifesto.
As for thy mention of the opinion expressed to thee by a certain individual that, in so far as concerneth the Spirit, there existeth no difference between us, his assertion is correct, for the Spirit is too exalted either to admit of differences or to be comprehended by allusions. It is the revelation of the Light of God’s singleness amongst men, the Sign of His ancient eternity before the nations. Whoso turneth himself thereto hath turned himself unto Him Who sent it forth, and whoso turneth away therefrom hath turned away from the One by Whose power it hath been manifested and endowed with utterance. It hath not changed from age to age, and such as it hath been it shall remain. Such differences as may be witnessed in the effulgence of its light are to be attributed to the mirrors that receive it, and to the disparity, in form and colour, of the images they reflect.	Quanto à tua menção da opinião que te foi transmitida por um certo indivíduo de que, no que diz respeito ao Espírito, não existe diferença entre nós, a sua afirmação está correta, pois o Espírito é demasiado exaltado para admitir diferenças ou para ser compreendido por alusões. É a revelação da Luz da unicidade de Deus entre os homens, o Sinal da Sua antiga eternidade diante das nações. Quem se volta para isso, volta-se para Aquele que o enviou, e quem se afasta daí, afasta-se d’Aquele por Cujo poder se tornou manifesto e dotado de expressão. Não mudou de época para época, e tal como tem sido, assim permanecerá. As diferenças que se podem testemunhar no brilho da sua luz devem ser atribuídas aos espelhos que a recebem e à disparidade, na forma e na cor, das imagens que reflectem.
O friend! Were but a single token to be revealed of the Secret which hath lain wrapped in mystery, the hearts of all those who, clinging to the things of men, have cast away the things of God, would be thrown into perturbation. Shouldst thou, having meditated upon the words that We have addressed to thee, arise with perfect steadfastness to act in such wise as We have intimated, thou wouldst undoubtedly accomplish such things as have been witnessed in a former age.	Ó amigo! Se apenas um único sinal fosse revelado do Segredo que permanece envolto em mistério, os corações de todos aqueles que, apegando-se às coisas dos homens, rejeitaram as coisas de Deus, ficariam perturbados. Se tu, tendo meditado nas palavras que te dirigimos, te levantasses com perfeita firmeza para agir da forma que sugerimos, realizarias, sem dúvida, as coisas que foram testemunhadas numa época anterior.
O friend! This Bird lieth imprisoned beneath the talons of cruelty and malice; It seeth for itself neither nest wherein to shelter nor heavenly expanse in which to fly. In such a plight as this, it summoneth mankind unto everlasting life. Blessed then be the attentive ear!	Ó amigo! Esta Ave está aprisionada nas garras da crueldade e da malícia; não vê para si mesmo nem ninho onde se abrigar, nem vastidão celestial onde voar. Numa situação difícil como esta, chama a humanidade para a vida eterna. Abençoado seja então o ouvido atento!
We beseech God to unite us in one holy court, and to graciously assist us to do that which is pleasing and acceptable unto Him.	Suplicamos a Deus que nos una numa corte santa e que nos ajude graciosamente a fazer aquilo que Lhe agrada e Lhe é aceitável.
